My Journey Writing Teaching Pre School Ballet

After over 30 years of teaching ballet, I am delighted to present my book, Teaching Pre-School Ballet. It represents years of experience, observation, and refinement, bringing together everything I have learned about introducing young children to the world of dance. My approach began with my own experiences as a young dancer and was further shaped by the framework provided by my first employer. Over time, I developed a structured way of teaching that goes beyond exercises and steps. It is more than a method, it is a philosophy that focuses on nurturing children’s creativity, confidence, and love of movement while laying strong foundations in ballet technique and discipline. Throughout the years, many teachers working with me and at my school encouraged me to document this approach, often saying, “You should write a book!” So I did. It wasn’t a quick process; balancing teaching, running the school, organising productions, and managing our charity and Instagram posts meant it took five years to complete. But the result is a practical resource designed for teachers who work with young children. My hope is that Teaching Pre-School Ballet inspires dance teachers and gives them the tools to make teaching pre-school ballet as magical and rewarding as it is for me. And that it will help more children experience the joy of dance from the very beginning of their journey. While the book outlines the principles and structure of the method, I also run workshops for those who wish to explore it in more depth. These sessions provide the opportunity to discuss the philosophy behind the approach and see how it works in practice.
