MyBallet Production-Programme

Welcome!

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you this evening to enjoy “Inside Newt’s Case”.

Performed by a cast of 32 members of MyBallet Academy, it is MyBallet Community-Youth Dance Company’s sixth production in 10 years.

How did “Inside Newt’s Case” came to be?

Well, after the positive impact our Hogwarts series of Ballets in 2015 and 2016 had on our students, remembering their pre-Covid experience they asked Ms Lydie to renew with Harry Potter’s world.

Freya Westmancott gave Ms Lydie all the necessary material to study the world of the Fantastic Beasts, and the story of “Inside Newt’s Case” slowly emerged as she was studying each creature.

Choreographed and directed by Lydie Schrepfer to accommodate every member of the school choosing to participate, we hope you will enjoy the fabulous ballet you will see today.

To your delight, we are also presenting a dance platform showcasing our younger pupils, contemporary students, Students of Udichi School of Performing Arts, Sreeparna’s students of Indian Dance, and members of Sitar Fusion.

Through this production, MyBallet Community was able to:

  • Give all MyBallet Academy’s students from Grade I & above the opportunity to perform in a genuine ballet production.
  • Give younger members of MyBallet Academy their exciting first taste of the stage.
  • Create a production that staff, students, volunteers, and parents would be proud to be part of.
  • Bring into focus the reason behind the technique and discipline required for dance classes.
  • Challenge the students taking part to attain the high standards we have chosen to set.
  • Give opportunities for local talents to taste the stage to engage in its realisation.
  • Bring dance closer to the community.
  • Demonstrate that with a bit of hard work, dedication, and commitment, sometimes something quite remarkable can be achieved.

This has only been possible because of the talent, goodwill and support of certain teachers, parents, friends and community support and it is thanks to them and their generous contribution that we can now sit back and enjoy the performance.

Kind regards, Lydie Schrepfer

Inside Newt’s Case

The Story

Inspired by Freya Westmancott, written by Ms Lydie

ACT 1

Scene 1- Jacob moved to New York to make fortune as a baker! With a sample of his best Polish pastries, he is hoping to win the favour of the bank for a loan to start his new life.

He is confidently packing his pastries inside his suitcase, when suddenly he is startled by a strange sight.

Is he dreaming? What is coming out of his suitcase? And furthermore, calling him to come inside!

Jacob takes all his courage and decides to investigate. He jumps in.

Scene 2- We discover an amazing water world… Proud Merpeople are riding the waves with their enchanting songs and the Lobalugs are preparing their poison when Jacob pulled into the water by the Grindyllows arrives. Totally overwhelmed by the beauty of the place, he forgets he cannot breathe under water and his about to drown.

Scene 3- Luckily Newt arrives in time to save him with a quick Bubble Charm. Jacob has so many questions; what is this new world? How is this possible – breathing under water?! Inside a suitcase?! This magical world baffles him. But no time to explain, it is feeding time and Newt puts Jacob to work right away.

What seemed a very scary and dangerous place, becomes an amazing adventure. Jacob has found a new friend and leaves Newt with the promise to come back soon.

ACT 2

Scene 1- Jacob is cleaning his new bakery while waiting for his friend Newt. Newt promised him a surprise and when he arrives, they quickly jump into the suitcase.

Scene 2- The Acromantulas are chatting, the Bowtruckles are chilling, the Kneazles are enjoying the sun, the Nifflers are searching, the Flobberworm is slowly being himself. A typical day in the suitcase, but for our protagonist it takes some getting used to all those strange creatures especially when Newt leaves him alone to deal with them.

When Newt comes back with the Zouwu’s favourite toy Jacob is relieved and they happily dance together.

Scene 3- Looking after all these Beasts is a lot of work and Newt leaves Jacob alone once again to babysit the Beasts during their nap time.

In a corner, Jacob sees a weird creature. Almost invisible and very shy, it is the Demiguise. A peaceful creature whom Jacob enjoys the company of.

Scene 4- But the peace is short lived as the Boggart has escaped its wardrobe and is in search of a prey. By changing into the shape of what Jacob fears the most – a troll – it is hoping to frighten him to death. Newt arrives in the nick of time again, and with a Riddikulus Charm turns the troll/Boggart into his friend Queenie.

Scene 5- This is instant love! Jacob is totally won by Queenie’s delightful charm. Realising this, Newt calls the real Queenie and invites her for a cup of tea.

Scene 6- A tea in style! Queenie arrives escorted by her Tea Girls for a very special afternoon with Newt and her new friend.

Jacob still has a lot to learn about this magical world and doesn’t understand all these magic practices. Why can’t we open the tea pot?

Scene 7- Well, because disaster will strike. And it does; the Occamy is out!

A flying feathered serpent which takes any space given to it, now out of the tea pot, it will crash everyone against the walls. Our friends must act quickly before it becomes too late, and the chase begins.

ACT 3

Scene 1- The next morning is here, with a beautiful and peaceful sunrise. The billywigs and Fwoopers are waking up to their morning routine when the Occamy – now the size of a house – flies right across them followed by our three friends.

Scene 2- The Swooping Evils are coming to announce the arrival of the Thunderbird and the Pheonix both kings of the sky.

Scene 3- But once again the peace is shattered by the frantic chase our three friends are conducting since the day before.

It is going to take everybody’s efforts to get the Occamy back in the tea pot but finally they succeed!

Scene 4- All is back to “normal” in this amazing world Inside Newt’s Case, and our friends celebrate with a last dance.

Scene 5- Jacob is back in our world of “Muggles”; but is it just us Muggles?…
